Sapporo budgets for land survey as it moves to renovate Satozuka Funeral Hall; a leading candidate site emerges.
The city of Sapporo plans to renovate the Satzuka Crematorium, a municipal crematorium, due to the aging of the building.
Regarding the renovation, the circular lawn plaza had previously been considered a strong candidate site.
However, because it would be closer to a residential area, there was much opposition.
In response, the city has abandoned the plaza as a candidate and is considering rebuilding around the crematorium. A budget has been allocated this time to conduct ground surveys and other work.
The survey will take until the end of 2027, after which a policy will be decided. But what will happen to promises made to local residents, such as the extension of the subway?
Attention will be focused on future developments.
Satzuka Crematorium
Satzuka Crematorium, located in Tokyo, Japan, is a modern funeral facility designed by the renowned architect Tadao Ando. Completed in 2013, it features a minimalist concrete structure with a serene, contemplative atmosphere, including a reflective water pool and a chapel that blends natural light with geometric forms. The site serves as a contemporary space for cremation and memorial services, reflecting Japan’s evolving funeral traditions while emphasizing peace and harmony with nature.
circular lawn plaza
The “Circular Lawn Plaza” is a modern, open public space designed as a circular grassy area, often used for community gatherings, relaxation, and events. While not a specific historic site, its design is inspired by ancient gathering spaces like Roman forums or village commons, emphasizing communal interaction. Its history is rooted in 20th-century urban planning trends that sought to create pedestrian-friendly oases within cities.
