Board games and bingo: Enjoyable activities to prevent frailty, developed by university students in Sapporo.
As physical and mental functions decline with age, this condition is known as “frailty.” It refers to the intermediate state between being healthy and requiring nursing care, and it is important to prevent it through proper diet, physical activity, and social engagement. However, it does require a certain level of awareness and effort, making it difficult to put into practice. In this context, mechanisms that allow people to enjoy games while naturally contributing to frailty prevention are gaining attention. Today, the 15th, is Respect for the Aged Day. We introduce efforts within Hokkaido aimed at achieving healthy longevity.

Sapporo City University’s Faculty of Design and Faculty of Nursing, including instructors, students, and graduate students, have been working on developing analog games for frailty prevention since 2023. The games are designed to encourage light exercise and knowledge acquisition while playing, as well as promote interaction among participants. So far, two board games have been created, and one bingo game is currently being improved. These are beginning to be used in care prevention settings, and those involved are calling for their application in various contexts.
