The city announced on the 26th that a fossil of a right whale family discovered in 2008 in Koganeyu, Minami Ward, Sapporo, has been confirmed as a new genus and species. A team from the Museum Activity Center and others identified it and named it “Sapporo Whale” in Japanese. The fossil was discovered in a stratum approximately 9 million years old, and based on the size of its head, it is estimated to have been 12.7 meters long. No fossils of right whale family from approximately 15 million to 6 million years ago had been found previously, and the center considers this a valuable material for clarifying the evolutionary gap period.
