Salmon farming is increasing in the Tokai region. Why is that?

Looking at recent food price trends compared to the previous year, salmon is up 11 yen per 100 grams to 329 yen, tuna is up 66 yen per 100 grams to 527 yen, milk is up 20 yen per liter to 339 yen, pork loin is up 9 yen per 100 grams to 283 yen, chicken thigh is up 8 yen per 100 grams to 151 yen, and eggs (mixed size, per pack) are up 14 yen to 308 yen.

Milk prices are higher partly because feed for dairy cows, which relies on imports, remains expensive. Egg supplies have decreased due to bird flu, which is another factor behind the price increase. Additionally, rising costs for packaging materials and shipping seem to be contributing to the overall price hikes.

Tokai region

The Tokai region is a major industrial and cultural area in central Japan, stretching along the Pacific coast between Tokyo and Osaka. Historically, it was a vital corridor during the Edo period as part of the Tokaido road, connecting the capital of Edo with Kyoto. Today, it includes Aichi, Gifu, Mie, and Shizuoka prefectures, with Nagoya as its largest city, known for automotive manufacturing and traditional crafts.
