It has been discovered that a “double voting” incident occurred in Gamagori City, Aichi Prefecture, regarding the House of Councillors election.

According to the Gamagori City Election Administration Committee, around 7:30 a.m. on the 20th, staff noticed that the number of admission tickets issued during the 7 o’clock hour at the polling station inside the city hall was one more than the number of votes recorded in the voter registration system.

Upon investigation, it was found that a person who had voted early on the 6th (without receiving an admission ticket at home) also came to vote on the 20th, resulting in a “double vote.”

The Election Administration Committee stated that the mistake occurred because the staff overseeing the polling station failed to check the system’s “early voting completed” status during the registration process.

Since the ballot box cannot be opened to identify the double-voted ballot, all votes will be treated as valid.

The Election Administration Committee plans to implement measures such as adding warning screens to the system to prevent similar incidents in the future.
