SURABAYA — Amid escalating political conflict, the public was shocked by a looting incident that targeted a residence in the Tanjung Priok area, North Jakarta, on Saturday (30/8/2025). Among the valuable items reported missing, the main focus fell on two luxury bags estimated to be worth a total of Rp 62 million.
The two looted branded bags were a cream-colored Louis Vuitton Vernis Brea GM with an estimated price of around Rp 25 million, and another bag worth Rp 36 million. These bags are not the latest models but still hold high value in the market due to their status as premium fashion items.
These bags were described as personal belongings and part of the family’s exclusive fashion collection. Their combined value is equivalent to dozens of times the regional minimum wage in Indonesia, sparking various comments from netizens. “The price of those two bags could fund a small business for a full year,” wrote one social media user.
This incident occurred when demonstrators broke into the residence after a controversial statement regarding the discourse on dissolving the House of Representatives. In a speech, the idea was referred to as “the idea of fools worldwide,” which triggered a wave of anger and led to anarchic actions.
Not only were the two bags taken, but the crowd also made off with a luxurious Richard Mille McLaren Speedtail watch worth Rp 11.7 billion, a collection of action figures, a television, and a safe containing cash. In a viral video on TikTok, several people were seen displaying the contents of the safe while scattering money into the crowd.
According to sources tracking international luxury resale websites, the Vernis Brea GM model is among the LV bags with a consistently high value due to its rare vernis (shiny patent leather) material and elegant design. Meanwhile, the Bergamo GM with the Damier Ebene pattern is a classic type highly sought after by collectors for its functional and timeless design.
This event illustrates how political conflict can spill over into criminal activity. Although the individual has been suspended from their position in the House of Representatives, the social impact of their statements is still being felt. As of now, the police have not provided an official statement regarding the exact amount of losses or any arrests related to the looting.
This incident serves as a serious reflection on the importance of maintaining public narrative in a vulnerable social situation. Regardless of social status or position, every citizen is entitled to legal protection, including in cases involving the loss of luxury items.
