A solidarity demonstration demanding an investigation into police violence turned chaotic in front of the Grahadi State Building on Friday afternoon. The enraged crowd set fire to dozens of motorcycles parked in the building’s courtyard.

This protest was a condemnation of police violence during demonstrations in Jakarta, particularly the case of online motorcycle taxi driver Affan Kurniawan, who was killed after being run over by a tactical vehicle. During the protest, the crowd demanded the National Police Chief thoroughly investigate the officers involved.

In addition to burning motorcycles, the crowd also threw Molotov cocktails and stones at the police. They damaged several public facilities, including breaking down iron fences, knocking over walls, and overturning trash bins. The riot was still ongoing at the time of reporting.
