A Russian court sentenced a 72-year-old American man to nearly seven years in prison on charges of fighting as a mercenary for Ukraine. The case was heard behind closed doors in Moscow.

The man, identified from his passport as a resident of Michigan, was arrested in April 2022, shortly after Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

He was found guilty of “mercenary activities” and “attempting to cross the state border of the Russian Federation,” according to court documents. The sentence was set at six years and ten months in a standard-security penal colony.
