A 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck the Caribbean Sea on Saturday, February 8, 2025, triggering tsunami warnings for several islands and the coasts of Central America and Mexico.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake occurred at 6:23 p.m. local time at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles). The epicenter was located 20 miles north of Honduras and 130 miles southwest of the Cayman Islands.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center initially issued a tsunami warning for the Cayman Islands, Cuba, Honduras, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic. Later, the warning was canceled for the Dominican Republic and Cuba, but remained in effect for the Cayman Islands, Honduras, and Mexico.

“Based on preliminary earthquake parameters, hazardous tsunami waves are possible for coasts located within 300 kilometers of the epicenter,” the warning center said in a statement.

Local authorities in the Cayman Islands urged residents to move to higher ground. In Honduras, the National Risk Management System activated emergency protocols and recommended evacuations in coastal areas.

The USGS reported that the earthquake was felt in several countries, including Belize, Guatemala, and Jamaica, but no significant damage or casualties have been reported so far.

Residents in the affected areas described the earthquake as a strong shaking that lasted for about 30 seconds. “Everything was shaking, and people started running out of their houses,” said a witness in the Cayman Islands.

Seismologists warn that aftershocks are possible in the coming hours and days, and advise staying away from the coast until the tsunami threat has passed.

The earthquake is one of the strongest recorded in the region in recent years. In 2021, a 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck Haiti, causing widespread destruction and thousands of deaths.

Authorities in the affected countries continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as more information becomes available.
