Renewable Energy Reaches New Milestone in Global Power Generation

Renewable energy sources accounted for a record share of global electricity generation last year, according to a new report. Solar and wind power led the surge, contributing to a significant drop in carbon emissions from the power sector.

The report found that renewables generated nearly a third of the world’s electricity in 2023, up from just over a quarter the previous year. This growth was driven by a rapid expansion in solar installations, particularly in China and Europe, alongside steady gains in wind power.

Experts say the trend is expected to continue as costs for renewable technologies keep falling and governments implement stronger climate policies. The shift away from fossil fuels is seen as crucial for meeting international climate targets.

Despite the progress, challenges remain. Grid infrastructure needs to be upgraded to handle the variable output from solar and wind farms. Additionally, energy storage solutions must be scaled up to ensure a reliable power supply when the sun isn’t shining or the wind isn’t blowing.

The report highlights that while the transition to clean energy is accelerating, much more work is needed to fully decarbonize the global power system by mid-century.
