JOMBANG – Grief can be a turning point, and Slamet Subari (68) proves that determination knows no age or physical condition. The middle-aged man from Rejoslamet Village, Mojowarno District, Jombang Regency, once lost hope after a motorcycle accident took his right leg. But an unexpected encounter with traffic police officers from Jombang Police changed everything.
The tragic incident occurred in late 2023. Slamet was on his way home from Ngoro when a motorcycle from the opposite direction hit him in the Mojowarno area. His injuries were so severe that he had to undergo amputation of his right leg.
“I was in shock. Not just because my leg was destroyed, but I immediately thought, how would I continue to provide for my family?” he recalled softly during a visit to his home.
Despite losing his leg, Slamet tried to accept reality. While undergoing treatment covered by insurance, his mind remained fixed on ways to stay productive. His five children and six grandchildren became his motivation.
With his skills in making batteries, Slamet slowly rebuilt his business from home. Despite limited resources and relying on a prosthetic leg for mobility, he remained optimistic.
“I tried to rise again. At first, I felt defeated. But then I thought, I can make batteries. Why not develop this?” he said enthusiastically.
However, there was one thing he didn’t know: as a person with a permanent disability, he was actually entitled to permanent disability compensation from the insurance provider.
Slamet’s story took a turn when he was accidentally approached by Jombang Traffic Police officers during a routine patrol. The officers, noticing his prosthetic leg, asked about his situation, revealing that Slamet had never received post-accident compensation.
“We immediately helped process his claim. Thankfully, the compensation of Rp25 million was finally received and used by Slamet to expand his business,” explained the officer in charge of traffic enforcement at Jombang Police.
The compensation was not just additional capital but also a new source of motivation for Slamet. “Thank you for the help and attention from the police officers. I feel less alone,” he said with teary eyes.
Jombang Traffic Police regret that many accident victims remain unaware of their right to government compensation. “Slamet’s case is an important lesson. Moving forward, we will intensify outreach so victims can promptly claim their rights,” the officer stated.
He also emphasized the importance of safe and orderly driving. “Accidents can happen anytime. But many cases can be prevented if drivers are more cautious and follow the rules,” he added.
