The death toll from landslides in North Tapanuli Regency (Taput), North Sumatra due to flood and landslide disasters has increased to 7 people, with 29 others declared missing and unable to be evacuated.

The regent detailed that floods and landslides in North Tapanuli have struck 6 districts: Pahae Jae District, Purbatua, Siatas Barita, Tarutung, Adian Koting, and Parmonangan District.

“There are 6 districts affected by the disaster. We categorize Pahae Jae District, Purbatua, Siatas Barita and Tarutung as flood disasters. Meanwhile, Adian Koting and Parmonangan districts are categorized as landslide disasters. So there are two categories of disaster,” he said.

For the landslide disaster category, Adian Koting District is the worst affected area.

In Adian Koting, at least 40 landslide points occurred, both along the national road Tarutung-Sibolga/Tapteng and in other locations. “Therefore, until now the Tarutung-Sibolga/Tapteng route remains completely paralyzed and inaccessible,” he stated.

The landslide disaster in Adian Koting District has also claimed lives buried under soil.

“The latest report we need to convey is that the death toll has increased to 7 people. All are in Adian Koting District. 2 people died in Parsikkaman Village and 5 more in Sibalanga. Besides the fatalities, there are still 29 more people missing, including in Parmonangan District, who have not been found,” he said.

Aid delivery to victims at the disaster locations cannot be maximized because road access and communications are cut off.

“The Taput Regency Government together with the National Police, Indonesian Military, National Search and Rescue Agency, and volunteers continue to carry out rescue efforts and aid delivery,” he stated.
