In commemoration of Earth Day, PT Bank Syariah Indonesia (Persero) Tbk (BSI) is inviting more than 10,000 female customers to participate in a sustainability initiative through tree planting.

This program is part of the “Smart Kartini, Sustainable Earth” campaign, which also coincides with Kartini Day and National Consumer Day. The first 10 female customers to visit a BSI branch office each receive a tree seedling to plant.

BSI President Director, Anggoro Eko Cahyo, personally handed over tree seedlings to customers in Denpasar, Bali. Meanwhile, other board members carried out similar activities at several branches in Jakarta.

With a network of over 1,100 branch offices across Indonesia, BSI aims to plant approximately 10,000 trees through this program.

In addition to environmental action, BSI is also reaffirming its commitment to empowering women. Currently, around 41 percent of BSI’s total 16,000 employees are women, while 47 percent of MSME segment customers are also women.

“We want to continue driving Indonesian women to advance and become economically empowered,” said Anggoro.

On the sustainability front, BSI implements Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles through three main pillars: sustainable banking, sustainable operation, and beyond banking.

Under the financing pillar, as of December 2025, BSI has distributed sustainable financing worth Rp73.2 trillion, with 21 percent of it being green financing, or around Rp15.66 trillion. The company has also issued a second-phase sustainability sukuk worth Rp5 trillion.

On the operational aspect, BSI runs various eco-friendly initiatives such as constructing green buildings, using solar panels, electric operational vehicles, and providing reverse vending machines in several areas.

On the social side, BSI optimizes the role of ZISWAF (zakat, infaq, sadaqah, and waqf) as an instrument for economic empowerment of the community. Over the past five years, BSI’s zakat distribution has reached Rp1.05 trillion to support improving community welfare.

BSI’s MSME financing as of February 2026 stood at Rp52.43 trillion, growing 6.10 percent year-on-year.

According to Anggoro, these various initiatives are part of BSI’s transformation as an Islamic bank that is not only focused on business performance but also provides social and environmental impact.

“BSI will continue to transform while adhering to sustainability principles, so that it can provide added value for the wider community,” he said.

Through the Earth Day momentum, BSI reaffirms its commitment to running a more environmentally friendly business while promoting inclusive and sustainable Islamic economic growth in Indonesia.

Kartini Day

Kartini Day is an Indonesian national holiday celebrated annually on April 21st to honor Raden Ajeng Kartini, a pioneering figure in the country’s women’s emancipation movement. Born into Javanese aristocracy in 1879, Kartini advocated for girls’ education and women’s rights through her letters, which were later published as “Habis Gelap Terbitlah Terang” (“Out of Dark Comes Light”). The day serves to recognize her legacy and promote gender equality and empowerment for women in Indonesia.

Earth Day

Earth Day is an annual global event celebrated on April 22 to demonstrate support for environmental protection. First held in 1970, it was founded by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson after a massive oil spill, sparking the modern environmental movement and leading to the creation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Today, it is observed by over a billion people worldwide through activities like tree planting, cleanups, and advocacy for climate action.

National Consumer Day

National Consumer Day is observed annually in India on December 24 to commemorate the enactment of the Consumer Protection Act in 1986, which established fundamental consumer rights and protections. The day aims to raise awareness about consumer rights, responsibilities, and redressal mechanisms, empowering individuals to make informed choices and fight against unfair trade practices. It highlights the importance of a fair marketplace and the ongoing need for consumer advocacy.
