The Bandung City Government is urging a change in public mindset to address the increasingly complex waste crisis, following the shocking discovery that approximately 300 tons of plastic waste are transported daily from river flows during the 2026 Eid holiday.

The Mayor of Bandung emphasized that the waste issue is not merely a matter of cleanliness but a major challenge requiring a comprehensive shift in public perspective. The surge in waste volume, particularly plastic, serves as a serious alarm that can no longer be handled with old approaches.

He stated that waste is an inevitable consequence of modern human life. As long as consumption activities continue, waste production will not cease.

“Awareness is crucial to building a new mindset; waste is not something that can be eliminated completely in a short time. Instead, the public must start learning to coexist with waste,” he said.

He further emphasized that the approach to waste must shift from mere handling to sustainable efforts. This means solutions must be continuously sought and developed alongside increasing public consumption activities.

He assessed that many parties still think the waste problem can be solved instantly. However, field realities show the opposite, especially in a major city like Bandung.

During the 2026 Eid holiday, the Bandung City Government recorded a surprising fact regarding plastic waste. Every day, about 300 tons of plastic waste were successfully transported from river flows in the city area.

This figure is considered very alarming and serves as tangible evidence that the waste problem has reached an emergency level. The situation also illustrates the low public awareness in managing waste.

He acknowledged that the discovery came as a major surprise to the government. The extremely high volume of waste shows this issue can no longer be taken lightly. In light of this, the Bandung City Government has begun moving to seek concrete solutions by involving various parties, including the private sector. Collaboration is seen as key to handling the large-scale waste problem.

“Several investors are being approached to support plastic waste management, especially in processing which requires significant technology and investment,” he said.

He explained that plastic cannot be handled simply. A special process is required so that the waste can be optimally recycled and reused.

The cleaning stage is crucial before plastic waste can be processed further. Without a cleaning process, the waste could potentially create new environmental problems.

“With a volume reaching hundreds of tons per day, the processing itself becomes a challenge. It requires not only manpower but also adequate systems and technology,” he stated.

He reiterated that plastic waste management has now entered the industrial category. This means its handling can no longer be done conventionally or on a small scale.

“Moving forward, a change in public mindset can go hand in hand with strengthening the waste management system. Without collective awareness, any effort will struggle to yield maximum results,” he said.
