Shubman Gill neck injury

Shubman Gill Admitted To Hospital: Indian captain Shubman Gill was admitted to the hospital on Saturday evening, just hours after retiring hurt during India’s first innings at Eden Gardens. Gill will remain under medical observation overnight. His participation in the first Test against South Africa is now uncertain. Gill retired hurt after experiencing a cramp in his neck while attempting a slog sweep off Simon Harmer’s bowling on Saturday. Before leaving the field due to injury, Gill had scored just four runs from three balls.

The incident occurred during the 35th over, following the drinks break. Shubman Gill had hit Harmer for a boundary through backward square leg but suffered a neck cramp during the shot. The physio immediately rushed to the field, but the star batsman had to retire hurt. According to reports, Gill has been admitted to Woodlands Hospital and will be under doctor’s observation throughout Saturday night.

The assistant coach stated, “We need to understand how he injured his neck. He might not have slept well last night. This has nothing to do with his workload.”

Gill has been playing continuously across all formats since taking over the Test captaincy in England earlier this year. He joined the team here after the conclusion of the White Ball series in Australia and participated in the first practice session on Tuesday.

Calling the timing unfortunate, the coach added, “Gill is very fit and takes good care of himself. It’s unfortunate that he suffered this neck injury this morning. We needed a good partnership from him at that time. The timing was bad.”

Earlier, the cricket board had stated in a release, “Shubman Gill has suffered a neck injury and the medical team is monitoring his condition. A decision regarding his participation will be made based on his recovery today.”
