Vijayawada/Hyderabad, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has advised consumers buying jewelry on Akshaya Tritiya to be cautious when purchasing gold, silver, and diamond ornaments. BIS stated that it is extremely important to check the hallmark, purity, and related information before making a purchase.
According to the released statement, jewelry purchases increase across the country every year on the occasion of Akshaya Tritiya. In view of this, BIS officials said that hallmarked jewelry is the most reliable indicator of purity. Hallmarking on gold jewelry has been mandatory in India since 2021. Every gold ornament must bear the BIS logo, a purity mark (such as 22K916), and a Hallmark Unique Identification Number.
Consumers are advised to verify the HUID number through the BIS Care app before purchasing. Meanwhile, hallmarking for silver jewelry is not yet mandatory, but BIS has recommended that consumers only buy hallmarked jewelry with fineness marks like 999 or 925.

It was also explained that gold purity is measured in carats, with 24-carat being pure gold, while 22-carat (916) is the most common for jewelry. If a greater than permissible deviation in purity is found during the hallmarking process, the jewelry is rejected. Regarding diamond jewelry, BIS has implemented a new standard, IS 19469:2025, under which it is mandatory to provide clear information about natural, synthetic (lab-grown), treated, and imitation diamonds. Only informed consumers can avoid fraud and maintain trust in the market. The institution emphasized that a hallmark is not just a mark, but a guarantee of purity and trust.
