Public welfare initiatives launched on the very first day, step taken to help needy children and elderly women

Surat. The city of Surat, known as the Diamond and Textile City, has once again witnessed an inspiring initiative related to social sensitivity and public welfare.

The newly appointed mayor of the Surat Municipal Corporation, Mayaben Mavani, has brought a change to traditional political culture by initiating a socially beneficial campaign upon taking office. She has appealed to her well-wishers and supporters to gift books, notebooks, pens, and saris instead of expensive flower bouquets.

This initiative by the mayor is receiving positive responses across the city. On Friday, people who came to congratulate her at the mayor’s office brought large numbers of notebooks, storybooks, pens, and saris instead of bouquets of flowers. Mayor Mayaben Mavani accepted these gifts and also began regular work by signing various administrative files in the office.

Help will reach needy children and elderly women

According to information from the mayor’s office, all the items received as gifts will be used to assist those in need. The notebooks, books, and pens meant for children will be distributed to children from footpaths, slums, and economically weak families to support their education.

Additionally, the saris received will be respectfully gifted to destitute women living in old age homes located in the city and surrounding areas.

Inspiration from a child seen on the footpath

Mayor Mayaben Mavani said that she got the inspiration for this initiative from an emotional scene. On the first day after becoming mayor, as she was returning home, she saw a poor child smiling while holding his mother’s hand by the roadside.

At that moment, she realized that bouquets of flowers worth thousands of rupees wither and end up in the trash within a few hours, whereas the same money could be used to put a book in the hands of a needy child and brighten their future.

Mayaben Mavani said, “Bouquets of flowers wither after some time, but when a book reaches a child’s hands, the smile on their face lasts for a long time. I decided that instead of flowers, such things should be given in my welcome that can benefit someone in need in society. My effort is that this position should not remain limited to administrative responsibility but should also be connected to the needs of society and people’s happiness.”

This initiative by the mayor is being seen as a positive start in the direction of social awareness and public service in the city.
