It has been officially announced that Shreyas Iyer will be the captain of the Indian T20 international team.

Shreyas Iyer will now take over the captaincy from T20 World Cup winner Suryakumar Yadav. Middle-order batsman Tilak Varma will serve as Shreyas’ vice-captain, while fast bowler Prince Yadav, who performed impressively for Lucknow Super Giants, has been included in the team for the series against England and Ireland.

At the age of 15 years and 71 days, Suryavanshi has become the youngest player ever to be selected for the Indian cricket team. He has broken the long-standing record of the great Sachin Tendulkar, who was 16 years and 205 days old when he made his Test debut against Pakistan in Karachi on November 15, 1989.

India will play two T20 international matches against Ireland on June 26 and 28, followed by a five-match T20 international series against England from July 1 to 11.

Shreyas returns to the national T20 team for the first time since the match against Australia in Bengaluru on December 3, 2023. Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has been rested from the England and Ireland tour to be available for the 2026 Asian Games.

Yashasvi Jaiswal has been included in the ODI team for the match against Afghanistan to replace the injured Virat Kohli.

Regarding Tilak Varma’s appointment as vice-captain, it was stated, “Tilak can learn more about the role of leading the team as Shreyas’ deputy, which is a clear indication of his development as a key member in the white-ball format.” It was further added, “Despite so much talent in T20 cricket, Suryavanshi has selected himself through his performances.”

When asked about including Suryavanshi in the Test team, it was said, “Why rush regarding red-ball cricket? We are excited about the performances Suryavanshi is putting in. Let him stay in T20 cricket for now.” Regarding Hardik Pandya, it was stated, “The main objective is to see if Hardik can play ODI cricket and stay fit, because there is also an ODI World Cup ahead.”

Wicketkeeper-batsman Dhruv Jurel will lead India in two multi-day matches against Sri Lanka. Devdutt Padikkal will be the vice-captain, and Ruturaj Gaikwad has also been given a place in the team.
