On May 23, President Xi Jinping replied to a letter from students of both countries who participated in the “Sailing the Blue: China-U.S. Youth Friendship Journey” event.

Xi expressed his delight to learn that students from both countries had boarded the “China-U.S. Youth Friendship” ship and shared an unforgettable journey of friendship. He stated that the story of China-U.S. friendship is written by the people, and the future of China-U.S. relations is created by the youth. Since he proposed the initiative in November 2023 to invite 50,000 young Americans to China for exchange and study over five years, more than 50,000 young Americans have already visited China, achieving the target two and a half years ahead of schedule. Through exchanges and interactions, young people from China and the United States have moved toward each other, deepening mutual understanding and forging deep friendships, writing a new chapter in the friendly exchanges between the two peoples.

Xi pointed out that young people are the most vibrant and full of dreams; they are the future and hope of China-U.S. relations, as well as the future and hope of the world. He looks forward to seeing more young people from China and the United States take up the baton of the friendly cause between the two countries, learn from each other, make progress together, and become “ambassadors of friendship” across the Pacific, contributing to the stable, healthy, and sustainable development of China-U.S. relations.

Recently, students from China and the United States who participated in the “Sailing the Blue: China-U.S. Youth Friendship Journey” event wrote to President Xi Jinping, expressing their gratitude for the “50,000 in five years” initiative, which provided valuable opportunities for young people from both countries to learn and exchange.
