Attention residents, the weather is about to change again. Over the next week, Wuhan will experience a mix of sunny and rainy days with significant temperature fluctuations. Remember to bring an umbrella and a jacket when going out.
From April 20 to 22, due to the eastward movement of an upper-level trough and the southward advance of cold air from the ground, the entire province will see a noticeable precipitation event.
Accompanying this moderate rainfall will be significant cooling and strong winds: the average temperature in Wuhan will drop by 12 to 14°C, with maximum temperatures falling below 20°C, and northerly gusts reaching 6 to 8 on the Beaufort scale. By April 23 to 24, the weather will turn partly cloudy to sunny, with sunshine returning.

Water lilies are blooming in the Wuhan area.
Interestingly, history seems to repeat itself. Last year, from April 20 to 22, Wuhan also experienced a light rain event. This year, the rain has arrived again, right on schedule.
April 20 marks “Grain Rain,” the last solar term of spring. “Grain Rain” comes from the phrase “rain nurtures a hundred grains,” meaning increased rainfall benefits the growth of cereal crops.
So, what are the agricultural benefits of this “Grain Rain with rain”? Rainfall during the Grain Rain period has many advantages: it is a critical time for wheat heading and flowering, as well as rapeseed pod formation. Ample rain promotes fuller grains. A good humidity environment is also very suitable for early rice seedlings to take root and grow.
An old saying goes, “Before and after Grain Rain, plant melons and beans.” This rain during the Grain Rain season is perfectly timed. It aligns with the solar term, carrying hopes for a good harvest, and provides a timely rain at a crucial stage for agricultural production, creating favorable conditions for spring sowing and planting.
After April 23, the weather will improve, and temperatures will gradually rise. It is recommended to use an “onion-style layering method” for dressing, to flexibly cope with the drastic temperature changes.
Roads will be slippery on rainy days, so please travel safely. Be cautious of local morning fog on sunny days affecting traffic and shipping, and guard against the adverse effects of strong winds on transportation, facility agriculture, and construction.
When the rain eases, you might also experience the traditional “walking in the Grain Rain,” feeling the last romance of spring, and savoring the poetic “moistening things silently” and the wisdom of farming civilization in the rain.
