Pyongyang, June 9 — On the morning of June 9 local time, Chinese President Xi Jinping and his wife Peng Liyuan visited the Sino-Korean Friendship Tower during a state visit to North Korea. They were accompanied by North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and his wife Ri Sol Ju.

Around 10:40 a.m., Xi and Peng Liyuan arrived at the Sino-Korean Friendship Tower, located at the foot of Moranbong Hill, where Kim Jong Un and Ri Sol Ju greeted them. The North Korean military band played the national anthems of both China and North Korea. Honor guards slowly carried a floral wreath onto the platform. The ribbon on the wreath read: “Eternal glory to the Chinese People’s Volunteers martyrs.” Xi slowly walked up to the platform and adjusted the ribbon. All present observed a moment of silence in honor of the Chinese People’s Volunteers martyrs. After the silence, Xi and Kim Jong Un watched a military honor guard parade.

Xi and Peng Liyuan, accompanied by Kim Jong Un and Ri Sol Ju, entered the memorial hall of the Friendship Tower. Kim Jong Un introduced Xi to historical materials, photographs, and oil paintings inside the tower depicting the Chinese People’s Volunteers fighting shoulder to shoulder with the North Korean people and jointly rebuilding their homeland. Xi stopped for a long time to carefully observe. Xi earnestly flipped through the roster of volunteer martyrs and introduced Kim Jong Un to the circumstances of the fallen volunteer soldiers.
Xi Jinping and Kim Jong Un agreed that the years of joint struggle between China and North Korea in the 1950s are an eternal historical memory for both sides.
