On August 30, the Guangdong Southern Tigers basketball club officially announced that, through friendly negotiations with the Guangzhou Loong Lions basketball club, Guangdong has obtained the exclusive signing rights for Guangzhou player Cui Yongxi. After review and approval by the CBA company, the club will complete pre-registration for Cui Yongxi. This means Cui Yongxi is returning to the Chinese basketball scene from the NBA and will represent the Guangdong men’s basketball team in the upcoming CBA season.

Cui Yongxi was born on May 28, 2003, in Nanning, Guangxi. He is 201 cm tall, weighs 93 kg, and plays as a small forward. In 2015, he joined the Dongguan Basketball School and won the national U15 championship in 2018. Starting from the 2022–2023 season, Cui began playing for the Guangzhou men’s basketball team in the CBA. In his rookie season, he averaged 11.9 points and 5.5 rebounds per game in the regular season, earning the Rookie of the Year award. In 2023, he won a bronze medal with the Chinese national team at the Hangzhou Asian Games. In the 2023–2024 regular season, his performance improved further, averaging 15.7 points and 6 rebounds per game, and he was selected as a starter for the Southern Team in the 2024 CBA All-Star Game.

After the season, Cui went to the United States to pursue his NBA dream, playing for the Portland Trail Blazers and the Brooklyn Nets, becoming the seventh Chinese player to appear in an official NBA game. Although he suffered a knee ligament injury in December and had to leave the court temporarily, he has maintained a positive and optimistic attitude and is currently undergoing systematic treatment and rehabilitation training.

This is the second high-profile player Guangdong has signed from Guangzhou recently. Just yesterday, Guangdong announced the acquisition of another national team player, Jiao Boqiao, from Guangzhou. With these two signings, the Guangdong men’s basketball team has significantly strengthened its roster. As an 11-time champion in CBA history, the Guangdong men’s basketball team will once again aim for the league title in the new season.
