On April 23, six labor models from the fields of aerospace, technology, communications, environmental protection, and transportation visited Shanghai Second Polytechnic University for a face-to-face exchange with faculty and students. They shared their working experiences and passed on the spirit of craftsmanship, delivering an inspiring ideological and political lesson.
During the “Face-to-Face with Labor Models” interview session, the six labor models shared their journeys of staying true to their original aspirations, overcoming difficulties, and achieving extraordinary accomplishments in their respective positions through vivid stories and real-life examples. From the “space kiss” of Shenzhou spacecraft docking to the “ten-thousand-mile track” of high-speed rail, from the “smart cloud system” solving plateau water supply challenges to the “sludge treatment” protecting urban green waters and mountains, from the patriotic dedication of “one chip power” to the persistent craftsmanship in smart manufacturing, from silent dedication in grassroots services to taking responsibility in key positions, the labor models used simple yet profound language to vividly interpret the spirit of dedication, excellence, hard work, innovation, selflessness, and contribution. They inspired faculty and students to take labor models as examples, integrate personal aspirations into the national development blueprint, and strive for innovation, hard work, and practical achievements.
In the thematic exchange session, Professor Liu Wen, a Shanghai advanced worker and Secretary of the Party Committee of the School of Marxism at Shanghai Second Polytechnic University, shared teaching explorations on integrating the labor model spirit into ideological and political courses. He discussed how to transform the labor model spirit into educational nourishment, making the courses more vivid and touching. Professor Yang Jinghui from the School of Intelligent Manufacturing and Control Engineering shared his educational story themed “Integration of Industry and Education, Cultivating Talents with Craftsmanship,” focusing on working at the front line, moving classrooms into workshops, and writing papers in practice, showcasing the responsibility of university teachers in nurturing talents through practical action. Zhou Yuxin, a gold medalist at the World Skills Competition and an outstanding alumnus of the university, demonstrated youthful vitality in skill development and dream pursuit through her own growth journey of hard work and innovation.
President Xie Huaqing of Shanghai Second Polytechnic University stated that the university consistently deepens the integration of promoting the labor model spirit, labor spirit, and craftsmanship spirit with the spirit of educators and scientists, building an educational system of “example guidance, course immersion, and practice internalization.” In recent years, the university has shown strong momentum in building an application-oriented innovative university, with continuously rising educational strength. Engineering and chemistry have entered the top 1% of ESI globally, continuously supplying high-quality talent for national strategies and Shanghai’s leading industries. He emphasized that inviting national labor models and master craftsmen to the podium is a vivid practice of the university’s fundamental task of cultivating talents through virtue, allowing the innovative spirit to take root and making practical responsibility the most distinctive contemporary quality of the university.
To pass on the labor model spirit from generation to generation, a ceremony was held at the event to appoint labor model mentors. Xie Huaqing issued appointment letters to the six labor models, hiring them as university labor model mentors to support teacher professional development and guide students in achieving their aspirations.
On the same day, Shanghai Second Polytechnic University also partnered with Pudong Vocational and Technical College, Shanghai Second Polytechnic University Affiliated Gonglu Middle School, ShanghaiTech University Affiliated School, Shanghai Second Polytechnic University Affiliated Pudong Zhenhua Foreign Economic and Trade Vocational and Technical School, Shanghai Industrial Technology School, Shanghai Economic Management School, Shanghai Second Light Industry School, and Pudong New Area Gonglu Central Primary School to establish a consortium for integrated ideological and political education across primary, middle, and high schools.
The university stated that in the next step, it will continue to leverage the advantages of labor model education, encouraging faculty and students to take examples as guides, fulfill missions through practical action, and continuously write new chapters in the construction of an application-oriented innovative university in the journey of serving national strategies and regional development.
