Xi Jinping Issues Important Instructions on Mountain Flood Disaster in Yuzhong County, Lanzhou City, Gansu Province

Spare No Effort in Searching for Missing Persons

Carry Out Targeted Flood Prevention and Disaster Relief Work to Ensure Public Safety During Flood Season

Li Qiang Issues Instructions

Since August 7, continuous heavy rainfall in Yuzhong County, Lanzhou City, Gansu Province, and other areas has triggered mountain floods. As of 3:30 PM on August 8, the disaster has resulted in 10 deaths and 33 missing persons.

After the disaster, Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, President of the State, and Chairman of the Central Military Commission, attached great importance to the situation and issued important instructions. He noted that the continuous heavy rainfall in Yuzhong County and surrounding areas has caused severe casualties. The top priority is to make every effort to search for missing persons, evacuate and relocate threatened residents, minimize casualties, and restore communication and transportation as soon as possible. Given the recent frequent extreme weather, all regions and relevant departments must remain vigilant, strengthen risk forecasting and early warnings, enhance hazard inspections and remediation, and reinforce emergency duty shifts to carry out targeted flood prevention and disaster relief work, ensuring public safety during the flood season.

Li Qiang, Member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Premier of the State Council, emphasized the need to promptly search for missing and trapped individuals, intensify rescue efforts, quickly repair damaged infrastructure such as communications and transportation, and relocate affected residents. Currently, the country is still in a critical period for flood prevention. The National Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters must guide all regions and relevant parties to remain alert, fulfill responsibilities, strengthen rainfall and flood monitoring, and improve disaster response to minimize casualties.

In accordance with Xi Jinping’s instructions and Li Qiang’s directives, the Ministry of Emergency Management has dispatched a working group to the site to guide search and rescue operations. The main responsible officials of the Gansu Provincial Party Committee are coordinating disaster relief efforts on-site. Currently, all response measures are being carried out in a tense and orderly manner.
