From August 31 to September 1, 2025, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit will be held in Tianjin. Leaders from more than 20 countries and heads of 10 international organizations will gather by the Haihe River to attend the largest summit since the establishment of the SCO.
“Let us work together to build a better home for the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, where people of all countries can live in peace, work happily, and enjoy prosperity.” Let us revisit this important message and look forward to the SCO family once again writing a new chapter of unity and cooperation.
Shanghai Cooperation Organization
The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) is a major Eurasian political, economic, and security alliance originally founded in 2001 by China, Russia, and four Central Asian nations. It evolved from the “Shanghai Five” mechanism, which was formed in 1996 to resolve border disputes and build mutual security along their shared frontiers following the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Today, it is one of the world’s largest regional organizations, focusing on combating terrorism and enhancing economic cooperation among its member states.
Tianjin
Tianjin is a major port city in northern China with a rich history as a treaty port, which is reflected in its unique architectural blend of traditional Chinese and European colonial styles. It grew in importance during the Ming and Qing dynasties and became a key hub for trade and modernization in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Today, it is known for its vibrant cultural scene, historic concessions, and as a significant economic center.
Haihe River
The Haihe River is a major waterway in northern China, historically formed through centuries of hydraulic engineering to control flooding and improve transportation. It flows through Tianjin and into the Bohai Sea, serving as a vital economic and cultural artery for the region since ancient times.
