New Delhi, June 4. The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Ropar has announced a new B.Tech curriculum to be implemented from the academic session 2026-27.

The institute has replaced the traditional and relatively rigid academic framework with a flexible, student-centric model, aimed at preparing students not only for employment but also for research, innovation, entrepreneurship, and leadership.

Under the new curriculum, students will complete most of their compulsory subjects by the fifth semester, while the final three semesters will be dedicated to advanced elective subjects, internships, research projects, startup activities, and interdisciplinary studies.

The four-year B.Tech program will have a total of 160 credits, with students having the facility to choose up to 30 credits of open elective subjects.

The curriculum has been designed in accordance with the National Education Policy 2020 and the National Credit Framework. Experiential learning, skill development, research, and social engagement have also been made part of the credit system.

IIT Ropar has also launched an interdisciplinary integrated dual degree program. Students with a CGPA of 7.0 or above will be able to choose this option after the sixth semester.

Upon completing an additional year and 40 credits, they will receive an M.Tech degree in fields such as Data Science, Robotics, Cybersecurity, Energy Systems, and Quantum Science, along with the B.Tech degree.

The institute has also made provisions for academic credits for research publications, startup activities, leadership roles, and national or international level achievements.

Additionally, clear pathways have been established for obtaining minor degrees and specializations, and the branch change process has been made simpler.

The new curriculum also includes humanities, social sciences, Indian knowledge tradition, ethics, communication, and life skills. Co-curricular activities such as NSS, NSO, music, and art will now be part of the academic framework.

IIT Ropar Director Prof. Rajeev Ahuja said that engineering education must evolve to meet the needs of a changing world, and the new curriculum will provide students with the opportunities and resources necessary to solve complex problems. Admissions under the new framework will apply to the B.Tech batch starting in the academic session 2026-27.

National Education Policy 2020

The National Education Policy 2020 is a comprehensive framework for education in India, approved by the Union Cabinet in July 2020. It replaces the previous policy from 1986 and aims to transform the country’s education system by emphasizing holistic, flexible, and multidisciplinary learning, with a focus on early childhood care, foundational literacy, and vocational skills. The policy also introduces changes such as a new 5+3+3+4 curricular structure and promotes the use of regional languages in instruction to make education more inclusive and accessible.

National Credit Framework

The National Credit Framework (NCrF) is a comprehensive policy initiative by the Indian government designed to unify and streamline the country’s education and skill development systems under a single credit-based framework. It integrates academic learning, vocational training, and experiential learning by assigning credits to all forms of knowledge acquisition, allowing students to seamlessly move between different educational streams and the workforce. Launched in 2022 as part of the National Education Policy 2020, the NCrF aims to enhance flexibility, recognition of prior learning, and lifelong learning opportunities for all citizens.
