The leader of Soc Trang ward said police are verifying a case where a group of people carried a coffin with a living person inside, parading and dancing on the street, causing public uproar.
On June 6, the leader of Soc Trang ward, Can Tho city, said police forces are reviewing and verifying the case where a group of people placed a living person in a coffin, then carried it in a parade and danced on the street, causing public disturbance.
According to this leader, local authorities learned about the incident through videos posted online in recent days. The ward has directed police to urgently investigate. If the incident occurred in the area as reported, authorities will handle it strictly according to regulations.
Earlier, social media sites spread many clips showing a celebration for a person believed to be the owner of a funeral home, N.T., in Soc Trang ward. In the clips, many people called it a “third-year death anniversary.”
The incident took place in the evening. A sound mixing table was set up in the funeral home, along with a scantily clad woman playing music. Around them, a large group of people continuously danced to the chaotic music.
Notably, a group of people in uniform carried a coffin in a parade, with a living person lying inside. During the procession, the person inside the coffin even sat up to dance with the crowd.
This group carrying the coffin took up one entire lane of the road. Many curious people gathered around the coffin, using phones and cameras to film and broadcast live on social media.
The clips, after being posted, quickly attracted tens of thousands of views, likes, and comments. Many viewers expressed outrage at this offensive behavior and questioned the role of authorities, while also suggesting that the group would certainly be summoned by police. Some people joked that they should glue and close the lid to make it more realistic.
Many social media pages with large followings also cut and reposted these clips to gain interaction and views.
On March 11, information from Can Tho City Police stated that the investigative police agency had issued a decision to prosecute a case, charge defendants, and temporarily detain a group of youths carrying weapons and causing public disorder in Phu Loi ward.
