The mismatch between majors offered in vocational high schools and the real needs of the industrial world is one of the triggers for the high Open Unemployment Rate in Banten Province.
The Governor of Banten stated that although Banten has approximately 8,924 small to large industries, local vocational high school graduates are often not absorbed because their competencies are irrelevant.
To address this, the Banten Provincial Government is working to overhaul the vocational education model to be directly integrated with labor market needs by partnering with the SMK Mitra Industri MM2100 Foundation.
„How can vocational high school graduates be truly ready for work. We want to optimize the vocational education model so they are absorbed as reliable and professional workers,“ said the Governor during a hearing with the SMK Mitra Industri MM2100 Foundation and APINDO Banten on Thursday, May 14, 2026.
Two vocational schools in the Modern Cikande Industrial Area, Serang Regency, and the Sawah Luhur Industrial Area, Serang City, will serve as pilot projects for industry-based schools.
The considerations are based on location and topography, the number of school-age children, the number of vocational schools in the surrounding area, and the economic growth of the local community.
„Currently, the SMK Mitra Industri MM2100 Foundation is conducting a feasibility study in both areas,“ he added.
Echoing the Governor, the Chairman of the SMK Mitra Industri MM2100 Foundation highlighted the imbalance between school majors and real-world needs.
Currently, many vocational schools around industrial areas are still dominated by the Computer Network Engineering major, even though 25 modern industries in Cikande involve metal works and manufacturing industries in the Kasemen industrial area.
„It would be better if the majors offered were more aligned with industrial workforce needs, such as logistics management, welding engineering, mechatronics, and machining engineering,“ he explained.
In this collaboration, the foundation offered two schemes to the Banten Provincial Government. For example, partnership and collaboration as stipulated in Ministerial Regulation No. 36/2014 on Guidelines for the Establishment, Change, and Closure of Primary and Secondary Education Units.
The foundation chairman cited a partnership scheme in Mojokerto, where the building and permits are owned by the school, while operations are handled by teachers and principals from the foundation.
„In Deltamas, it is a collaboration. That means the foundation is present with its team, but there is curriculum and supervision cooperation,“ he explained.
Efforts to Reduce Unemployment Rates
The Head of the Banten Education and Culture Office welcomed this collaboration as a solution to major challenges in Banten’s education sector.
In addition to free school programs to reduce dropout rates, curriculum adjustment of saturated majors is key.
„With this collaboration with the SMK Mitra Industri Foundation, I am optimistic that vocational high school graduates will be truly ready for work and the unemployment problem can be resolved,“ he concluded.
