New Delhi, India on Thursday described a social media post by US President Donald Trump, in which he referred to India and some other countries as « hell » in the context of immigration, as « ignorant » and « inappropriate. » India’s response came after Trump reposted comments by a US radio show host, which included derogatory remarks about India. The US President’s post sparked controversy.
The comments were made in reference to a case challenging birthright citizenship in the United States. The US embassy, in an attempt to mitigate the damage caused by these remarks, issued a message stating that Trump believes India is a « great » country led by « a good friend of his. »
A spokesperson said, « We have seen the comments, as well as the statement issued by the US embassy in response. » He added, « These comments are clearly ignorant, inappropriate, and indecent. They certainly do not reflect the reality of India-US relations, which have long been based on mutual respect and shared interests. »
Earlier, the US embassy spokesperson had said, « The President has stated that ‘India is a great country and at its helm is a very good friend of his.' » However, the embassy spokesperson did not clarify where or when Trump made the remark that India is a great country.
