After the events in West Bengal, internal strife within the party has come to the fore. A senior TMC leader and the Advocate General of Mizoram, Biswajit Deb, stated that if the Lok Sabha elections had been held after the RG Kar incident, the Trinamool Congress would not have secured even 9 seats.
His remarks have caused a stir within the party. Deb cited the rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College as the biggest reason for the party’s defeat.
He said: Mamata Banerjee could not handle this matter. Instead of ensuring punishment for the accused, the situation worsened. There were protests across the country. If the Lok Sabha elections had been held after this incident, the party would not have crossed even 9 seats, instead of 29.

Biswajit Deb said that over the past five years, corruption was rampant in every department. Ministers, MPs, and MLAs were arrested, yet many were given tickets again. People were angry about this. Jobs for 26,000 teachers were lost, and the government could not do anything. He said the public thought that if Trinamool came to power again, the situation would worsen further.
He also attributed the party’s defeat to Abhishek Banerjee’s statements and arrogance. He said: There was no communication with the workers. There was an attempt to run the party like a corporation, whereas politics operates at the grassroots level.
Deb described Mamata Banerjee’s strategy of targeting a specific community as dangerous. He said: The Sanatani Hindus united. They feared that if Trinamool came to power in 2026, they might have to leave Bengal.
He acknowledged that some leaders understood the ground realities, but the top leadership was overconfident and arrogant. He also made it clear that he would decide on his resignation within the next two days.
