Sirohi. The government’s interest-free short-term crop loan scheme and affordable tractor rental service are proving to be a major relief for farmers. With access to loan funds, farmers are focusing more on cultivating profitable crops, which is increasing their income and enabling them to save. If the loan is repaid within the specified period, farmers do not have to pay any interest. Additionally, the availability of tractors at low rental rates has simplified plowing and field preparation, reducing farmers’ dependence on moneylenders. In Sirohi district, 34,115 farmers associated with village service cooperative societies are benefiting from various schemes, including around 4,000 farmers from the Abu Road block.

Farmers are provided with interest-free short-term loans of up to 1.50 lakh rupees for sowing, fertilizers, seeds, and other agricultural activities for both the Rabi and Kharif seasons. This amount must be repaid within the stipulated time. If the loan amount is not overdue, farmers can continuously avail of this scheme. To apply, farmers associated with the cooperative society must submit an online application. After verification by the Sirohi Central Cooperative Bank, the loan amount is deposited into the farmer’s account.

Under the livestock scheme through cooperative societies, farmers are given interest-free loans of up to one lakh rupees for constructing animal sheds and other facilities. This loan must be repaid within one year. The scheme enables farmers to better care for their livestock, and in addition to farming, they earn extra income from dairy animals.

According to the manager of the Santpur cooperative society, under this scheme implemented in 2022-23, the government has provided tractors to cooperative societies. Farmers associated with the society are given this facility at a low fee when they need a tractor for field operations. In the Abu Road block, this facility is being provided at the society level in Akarabhatta, Moongathala, Deldar, and Kiwrali.

This year, the district has set a target of distributing 292 crore rupees in interest-free short-term crop loans. This includes 157 crore rupees for Kharif crops and 135 crore rupees for Rabi crops. Loan distribution for Kharif crops will continue until July. So far, 14,760 farmers have been given loans totaling about 82 crore rupees. Last year, the target was 281 crore rupees, which was achieved at 99 percent.

I use the loan amount for crops that yield higher profits. I am earning income and also saving. I repay the loan to the society on time, so I get the loan twice a year.

Farmers have become more aware of taking short-term crop loans. They are reaping great benefits from it. This year, a target of 292 crore rupees has been set for loan distribution for Rabi and Kharif crops.
