The turning point of the match came in the 51st minute. Adam Wharton unleashed a trademark long-range shot that forced the Rayo Vallecano goalkeeper to push the ball away. French striker Jean-Philippe Mateta was in the right place at the right time to tap in the rebound and open the scoring.

Before Mateta’s goal, both Rayo Vallecano and Crystal Palace had dangerous chances but neither side could capitalize. After Mateta scored, Rayo Vallecano pushed forward in search of an equalizer.

In that scenario, Crystal Palace switched to a counter-attacking defense and continuously created good opportunities. However, Crystal Palace’s strikers could not finish them off to extend the lead. 1-0 in favor of Crystal Palace was the final score of the final.

Crystal Palace becomes the first team in nearly 40 years to win a European trophy on their debut appearance. This victory ensures Crystal Palace a spot in next season’s Europa League, alongside Bournemouth and Sunderland.
