The long-standing tension is now coming to an end. The speculation over a change of Chief Minister in Karnataka is about to be settled. If all goes well, Siddaramaiah will resign on Wednesday or Thursday. D.K. Shivakumar will become the new Chief Minister in his place. However, the Congress high command is not willing to disappoint Sidda. He has been offered a seat in the Rajya Sabha. At the same time, it is reported that he is being considered for a major role at the central level in the future.

The party has just returned to power in Kerala, but in the neighboring state of Karnataka, the Congress’s discomfort continues. On Tuesday, the Congress summoned the leaders of the two warring factions to Delhi for lengthy discussions. The high command held meetings with both factions for about an hour and a half. Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, and K.C. Venugopal listened to their views in three separate rounds. Priyanka Gandhi also listened to both leaders separately. Later, Priyanka informed her mother, Sonia Gandhi, the Chairperson of the Congress Parliamentary Party, about the views of both leaders. Sources within the Congress say Priyanka wants Shivakumar to be immediately promoted as Chief Minister of Karnataka, so that there is no doubt in the party or the public mind about his leadership for the 2028 elections.

The entire high command has agreed to Priyanka’s proposal. Together, they have convinced Siddaramaiah to resign after explaining the situation to him. He may resign on Wednesday or Thursday. To show that everything is proceeding smoothly, Siddaramaiah has been offered a position as a Rajya Sabha member. He has also been promised a major party position in the future. Since he is a Dalit face, there is talk of utilizing him at the national level. However, Sidda has not yet decided whether he will enter Delhi politics in the future.

Incidentally, Shivakumar’s supporters have long been demanding his promotion, following the power-sharing formula established after the Congress’s victory in the 2023 assembly elections. Now, that demand is set to be fulfilled thanks to Priyanka Gandhi. It is reported that she has been lobbying on behalf of Shivakumar with the party’s top leaders.
