A video of the intoxicated BDO’s ‘bullying’ behavior towards a young protester has already spread across social media. However, the authenticity of that video has not been verified. In the viral video, the BDO is seen abusing the protesting youth, using foul language, threatening to slap him, and even trying to snatch his mobile phone. Despite being arrested for this serious offense, the ‘removed’ BDO of Rajganj, Prashanta Barman, was saved again in court. On Tuesday, the Barasat District Court granted bail to the accused BDO on a bail bond of 1,000 taka.

Allegations were raised that Prashanta Barman had applied for anticipatory bail in the Barasat court during the investigation by using his ‘influence’. The court granted it. Later, the Bidhannagar Commissionerate Police challenged that order in the Calcutta High Court.

Swapan Kamilya, a gold trader from Dattabad, Salt Lake, and a resident of Dantan, West Medinipur, was murdered. The victim’s family filed a complaint with the police, stating that Swapan was abducted and killed on October 28. The name of Rajganj BDO Prashanta Barman was implicated as the main accused in that incident. The court had ordered him to surrender. Yet, the Bidhannagar Commissionerate Police could not arrest him. During the investigation, the police learned that the businessman was taken to a flat in New Town and killed. The next day, on October 29, Swapanbabu’s body was recovered from the Jatragachi canal bank near the flat. As the investigation progressed, the case was transferred from the Bidhannagar South police station to the Commissionerate’s detective branch. In connection with the murder, a total of five people close to the BDO were arrested in stages.
