Meanwhile, western parts of Rajasthan may record 47 degrees, and many areas in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh are expected to see temperatures of 44-46 degrees. Nighttime temperatures may remain around 27-29 degrees, making it difficult to sleep.
According to weather scientists, heatwave and severe heatwave conditions persist in Delhi-NCR, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and parts of Maharashtra. Barmer and Jaisalmer in Rajasthan are recording the highest temperatures. Parts of eastern India, such as Odisha, Bihar, and Gujarat, also continue to suffer from heat, although some areas in southern India and the northeast are experiencing relative relief due to rain.
Power and water crisis deepens in the country
Maharashtra, Gujarat, and parts of Chhattisgarh are also reeling under heat with temperatures of 42-45 degrees. Heatwaves are ongoing in Odisha and Bihar in eastern India. However, pre-monsoon activities in some southern states and the northeast are keeping temperatures relatively lower.
The intense heat has significantly increased the demand for water, leading to a water crisis in many areas. The surge in electricity consumption has caused frequent power cuts, further adding to people’s troubles. The extreme heat has led to a rise in cases of heat stroke, dehydration, and other illnesses. Hospitals are seeing an influx of patients. Animals and birds are also suffering from the heat, with reports of animal deaths in several places.
When will relief come from this scorching heat?
According to the IMD forecast, the heat will peak from May 19 to 21. After May 22, a slight drop in temperatures may occur in some areas. After the monsoon reaches Kerala, widespread relief from rain is expected in northern and central India in the first week of June. Until then, it is important to take precautions against the heat: drink plenty of water, consume ORS and fruits, wear light and loose clothing, and cover your head when going out.
