On May 14 at 10:20 a.m., at the construction site of the elevated layer of the Shanghai East Railway Station hall in the Oriental Hub, located in Zhugiao Town, Pudong New Area, Shanghai, after 14 hours of intense work, the steel roof truss of the station hall, covering a total area of 74,000 square meters and weighing 9,000 tons, was vertically lifted 13.5 meters to its designed position. This marks the start of the metal roof construction phase for the Shanghai East Railway Station.

The entire roof structure of the Shanghai East Railway Station in the Oriental Hub measures 390 meters from east to west and 335 meters from north to south, with a projected area of approximately 113,000 square meters. It consists of 119 diamond-shaped roof units. The construction plan involves a one-time overall lift of the main part covering 74,000 square meters, with the remaining 39,000 square meters lifted in batches.

The main lifted roof section is equivalent to the area of 176 standard basketball courts (based on 420 square meters per court), and its weight is equivalent to 6,000 mid-size sedans (based on 1.5 tons per sedan). During the lifting process, the construction team dynamically monitored 729 data points. Using a computer synchronized control system at the main console, they drove 56 pump stations and 178 lifting cylinders to operate synchronously, ensuring full visibility, control, and traceability throughout the process to guarantee safe and manageable construction.

As the main construction management entity, Shanghai Oriental Hub Investment and Development Group Co., Ltd., along with its subsidiary Shanghai East Railway Station Construction and Operation Co., Ltd., worked with the Shanghai East Railway Station Project Management Department of China Railway Shanghai Bureau Group Co., Ltd. Before construction, they organized the construction companies Shanghai Construction Group and China Railway 24th Bureau to invite domestic experts in steel structures to review the construction plan. They selected representative roof units as process samples, conducted full-scale 1:1 integrated process tests, and used BIM technology with parametric modeling for seven full construction simulations. This allowed comprehensive optimization of steel structures, electromechanical pipelines, and node structures, eliminating risks in advance and ensuring construction precision and structural durability.

To date, the Shanghai East Railway Station in the Oriental Hub has completed construction tasks including the track support layer, elevated layer, and some bridge piers and bridges in the throat area, accounting for 50.23% of the total construction volume. According to the construction schedule, the station will complete metal roof construction in July this year, facade curtain wall construction in September, and basically finish electromechanical installation and decoration work by December.

The Shanghai East Railway Station in the Oriental Hub is designed with 15 platforms and 30 lines, with a total station area of over 1.3 million square meters, including a main station building area of about 160,000 square meters. It is expected to be ready for operation by July 2027. Once completed and operational, the station will connect to the second phase of the Shanghai-Suzhou-Nantong Railway, the new Shanghai-Hangzhou High-Speed Railway, and other lines. Through the airport link line, it will achieve rapid interconnection with Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station, Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport, and Shanghai Pudong International Airport, helping Shanghai form a layout of “Hongqiao Hub in the west and Oriental Hub in the east.”
