The education world in West Java is buzzing with plans to rename schools, including two favorite schools in Bandung City: SMAN 3 Bandung and SMAN 5 Bandung.

These two schools are part of the West Java Provincial Government’s ambitious project to establish Unggul Human Schools (Maung). Bandung City is an exception among 27 other districts and cities, which typically only receive one high school in this program.

Explanation from the West Java Education Office

The head of the West Java Education Office confirmed the appointment of these two top schools in Bandung as part of the Maung School development.

“For high schools, one per district/city, except Bandung has two, SMA 3 and 5 as exceptions, then for vocational schools, one per branch office,” he stated some time ago.

41 Schools Targeted

In total, 41 public schools have been selected as development centers for Maung Schools. The composition consists of 28 high schools and 13 vocational schools spread across various regions in West Java, targeted to start accepting students in the 2026/2027 academic year.

The official explained that school selection was based on proposals from the West Java Education Office branch offices in each region, before being verified by a team formed by the provincial government.

“Yes, it was done based on proposals from the branch offices; the branch offices are more familiar with conditions in their respective areas, and then it was collected,” he said.

“Then verification was carried out by the team formed through that process, and it became the basis for the Governor’s Decree,” he continued.

Names to Be Changed

Not only preparing a new educational concept, the West Java Provincial Government also plans to rename these schools to Maung School. However, this nomenclature change is still awaiting approval from the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education.

“Yes (the name becomes Maung School), we will propose it to the ministry. If permitted by the ministry, we will do that,” the official said.

Decision Lies with the Central Government

According to him, the final decision remains with the central government because Maung School is a new breakthrough initiated by the West Java Provincial Government.

“That depends on the ministry, because this is essentially a program; whether this program can change the name or not,” he said.
