Securities firms report lowest quarterly profit from proprietary trading in four quarters.
Securities industry profits in the first quarter of 2026 still increased compared to the same period, but were the lowest in the last four quarters. Many cases recorded losses or declines compared to the same period, mainly due to proprietary trading.
Proprietary trading backfires, many securities companies pay the price

Although still growing compared to the same period, the overall picture also reflects some negative points of the market in the first quarter of the year.
Specifically, up to about 17 out of 40 companies reported losses or declines in business results compared to the same period last year.
A series of companies recorded poor results, such as EVS losing 157.5 billion VND, VDS losing 24.2 billion VND, SBS losing 5.2 billion VND, and OCBS losing 3.475 billion VND.
Most companies explained that the losses were due to the impact of proprietary trading activities. Uniquely, EVS stated it had to make provisions for NVB shares, although these were actually collateral assets recovered from bad debts.
In the context of fierce competition in brokerage fees and margin lending, many securities companies have pushed proprietary trading to improve ROE efficiency.

Nguyen The Minh – Director of the investment banking division at An Binh Securities (ABS) – believes that proprietary trading is a double-edged sword.
Securities companies focusing on brokerage and margin lending were less affected in the recent period, while those pushing financial investments faced greater risks when the market turned.
Not only small companies, many businesses with strengths in proprietary trading also recorded declines. For instance, VIX’s profit dropped over 60% compared to the same period, while CTS decreased by over 30%.
Meanwhile, another unit strong in proprietary trading, SHS Securities, has also announced a strategy to reduce dependence on the proprietary trading segment (from 52-55% to about 35%) to boost margin lending and investment banking.
The new CEO of SHS, Nguyen Duy Linh, stated that he will avoid shocking the market and will consider actions based on business quality and market conditions.
Margin lending grows but profit margins erode
Besides proprietary trading, the margin lending segment, a key pillar of the industry, is also facing pressure. Although outstanding loan
