The 80th anniversary of Bandung Lautan Api in Bandung has become a moment to revive the spirit of struggle to answer today’s challenges, from the waste crisis to strengthening community unity. The ceremony held by the Bandung City Government took place solemnly, attended by figures, former mayors, and veteran legions who are living witnesses of the history of the struggle.

Bandung Mayor Muhammad Farhan emphasized that this commemoration is not just about remembering the past, but also a starting point to continue the struggle in a contemporary context.

“The values of courage and sacrifice born from the Bandung Lautan Api event must be translated into real action in facing the city’s problems today,” Farhan said at Bandung City Hall on Thursday (4/23/2026).

Farhan assessed that current modern challenges, waste management, urban density, and changes in community behavior require the same collective spirit as when the people of Bandung fought to defend independence.

Farhan cited the waste problem, which currently reaches about 200 tons per day that has not been collected, as a new battlefield that must be resolved together. This condition is triggered by restrictions on disposal at the Sarimukti Landfill and the planned closure of the landfill in the near future.

“Therefore, we are accelerating waste processing from upstream by involving the community, business actors, and commercial area managers,” he said.

According to him, strategic steps are also being prepared through the construction of at least 24 technology-based waste processing facilities, ranging from organic processing to thermal systems.

Farhan emphasized that success in facing current problems does not only depend on the government, but also on the active participation of citizens as part of the spirit of mutual cooperation.

“The spirit of Bandung Lautan Api is a collective spirit. In the past, it was against colonialism, now it is against city problems,” he said.

In addition to the ceremony, the commemoration also included a pilgrimage to the Cikutra Heroes Cemetery as a form of respect for the fallen fighters. The group scattered flowers on eight hero graves, seven of which were unidentified, symbolizing selfless sacrifice.

Farhan mentioned that the existence of these unnamed graves serves as a reminder that the struggle for independence involved many figures who were not recorded, but whose services remain eternal.

Farhan also touched upon one hero’s name suspected to be from outside West Java as evidence that the Bandung Lautan Api struggle involved all elements of the nation.

“The spirit of unity across ethnicities and regions was the main strength in defending Indonesia’s independence,” Farhan said.

Farhan added that through this 80-year momentum, he invites everyone not just to remember history, but to make it an inspiration in building a better city.

“The struggle is not over, but continues in different forms, demanding commitment, collaboration, and concern from all members of society,” Farhan said.
