Guwahati: The Guwahati High Court has rejected the anticipatory bail petition of Congress leader Pawan Khera. Pawan Khera had sought bail from the court in a criminal case filed by Assam Chief Minister’s wife, Rinki Bhuiyan Sarma. The wife of Himanta Biswa Sarma filed this case regarding allegations made by Pawan Khera concerning multiple passports and undisclosed properties abroad.

Court had reserved the verdict on Tuesday

On Tuesday, senior lawyers Abhishek Manu Singhvi and K.N. Chaudhary appeared in court on behalf of Pawan Khera. Meanwhile, Advocate General Devajit Saikia appeared on behalf of the Assam government. The hearing on this matter lasted about three hours in the Guwahati High Court on Tuesday. After this, the court had reserved its verdict.

On Tuesday, senior lawyer Abhishek Manu Singhvi argued that there is no risk of the petitioner fleeing, so he should be granted bail. He also argued that this is at most a case of criminal defamation, which can only proceed through a private complaint. Meanwhile, Advocate General Devajit Saikia, appearing for the Assam government, argued in court that this is not an ordinary defamation case. He said the main offenses are fraud and forgery.
