Fugitive Zaldy Co
MANILA, Philippines — Justice Secretary Fredderick Vida is expected to travel to the Czech Republic on Thursday, April 23, to arrange the return of former congressman Zaldy Co to the Philippines.
“I don’t have the details yet, but tomorrow, I will be flying,” Vida said.
He will be accompanied to Prague by DOJ Chief State Counsel Dennis Chan.
However, he said talks are ongoing with counterparts in the Czech government and other officials to set up meetings there.
Vida previously stated that the Czech Republic and the Philippines are among the signatories to the United Nations Convention Against Corruption, an agreement between various countries for international cooperation to fight global corruption, while also studying other legal options.
“If you ask why Secretary Vida is confident? This is one of the reasons I hold on to, because I know, we know that in the Czech Republic they do not condone this, they will not allow it, right, that the objective of holding accountable those who should be held accountable because they are hiding in another country will be thwarted,” Vida said.

The United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC) is a landmark international treaty adopted by the UN General Assembly in 2003 and entering into force in 2005. It is the first global legally binding instrument to combat corruption, covering areas such as prevention, criminalization, international cooperation, and asset recovery. With nearly all UN member states as parties, it serves as a key framework for countries to strengthen anti-corruption laws and collaborate across borders.
