Punjab, 21 April 2026. A significant step has been taken regarding election preparations in Punjab. Following the guidelines of the Election Commission of India, the state’s Chief Electoral Officer has issued strict orders concerning the duties of Booth Level Officers (BLOs). The aim of these directives is to make the voter list more accurate and updated.

The CEO of Punjab has instructed Deputy Commissioners of all districts to immediately remove any BLOs assigned to census duties. The CEO argues that the Assembly Elections in Punjab are approaching and BLOs are busy preparing for them. A BLO cannot handle two tasks at once. Following the CEO’s directives, district officials have instructed relevant authorities not to deploy BLOs for census work. It has also been stated that if any BLO is appointed for census duties, they will be removed and replaced by another officer.

According to the new orders, it will be mandatory for BLOs to go door-to-door in their respective areas to verify voters. This includes registering new voters, removing the names of deceased or relocated individuals, and correcting all details. Officials have made it clear that any negligence in this process will not be tolerated.

The state’s Chief Electoral Officer stated that the accuracy of the voter list is the foundation of democracy, so BLOs must fulfill their responsibilities with complete seriousness and transparency. A system of regular monitoring and reporting has also been put in place to track the progress of the work.

According to sources, technology will also be used extensively this time. Data updating and tracking will be done through mobile apps and digital platforms, which can make the process faster and more effective.

Experts believe that this step will play an important role in making the upcoming elections fair and transparent. An accurate voter list not only strengthens the voting process but also helps reduce electoral disputes.
