Apple Inc. announced on the 20th that John Ternus, the company’s senior vice president of hardware engineering, will succeed Tim Cook as Apple’s CEO on September 1, with Cook transitioning to executive chairman of the board.

The announcement stated that Cook will continue as CEO through the summer to ensure a smooth transition with Ternus. As executive chairman, Cook will be involved in certain company matters, including engaging with decision-makers around the world.

The announcement also indicated that Arthur Levinson, who has served as non-executive chairman of Apple’s board for the past 15 years, will become lead independent director starting September 1. Ternus will also join the board on September 1.

Cook joined Apple in 1998 and became CEO in 2011, succeeding company co-founder Steve Jobs, who passed away shortly after. Ternus joined Apple’s product design team in 2001, became vice president of hardware engineering in 2013, and was promoted to senior vice president of hardware engineering in 2021.
