India Biotech and GlaxoSmithKline will collaborate to produce a Shigella vaccine.

Hyderabad, A new vaccine against a severe diarrheal disease called Shigella has been announced. The vaccine, named altSonflex1-2-3, is specifically being developed with children under five years of age in mind, who are most affected by this disease.

What is Shigella and why is the vaccine important?

Shigella is a type of bacteria that spreads through contaminated water or food, causing issues like diarrhea, fever, and stomach pain. The disease particularly affects children and has a severe impact in low and middle-income countries. The effectiveness of antibiotics used to treat it is diminishing, which increases the need for this vaccine.

Features and technology of the vaccine

The altSonflex1-2-3 vaccine is based on GMMA technology, which enhances the body’s immune response through the outer membrane of bacteria. This technology is affordable, effective, and scalable, making the vaccine accessible to poor and developing countries.

Tests conducted so far and future plans

The vaccine has already been tested in Europe and Africa
