From April 11th to 13th, the National Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) Clinical Application and Transformation Conference, themed “Intelligent BCI, Reshaping Diagnosis and Treatment,” was held in Beijing’s Fengtai District. At the conference’s opening ceremony, Fengtai District, in collaboration with Beijing Tiantan Hospital, unveiled four major cooperative achievements. These include establishing a high-level innovation industrial park, developing a specialized large model for the brain health industry, constructing a matrix of industrial funds worth tens of billions, and implementing a group of landmark key industrial projects, aiming to create a global hub for BCI clinical innovation.
Fengtai District serves as the core area for Beijing’s BCI industry development, possessing unique and irreplicable core advantages. It is home to national-level clinical and research centers, represented by Tiantan Hospital and the China Rehabilitation Research Center, forming a full-lifecycle resource system of “surgical implantation + rehabilitation training” and establishing a globally rare “clinical validation closed loop.”
At the conference, Fengtai District and Beijing Tiantan Hospital jointly released the four major cooperative achievements, marking a new phase of comprehensive implementation of their deep integration in the BCI field, which will vigorously promote the innovative development of China’s brain health industry.
Regarding the establishment of the high-level innovation industrial park, the plan centers around Tiantan Hospital and the Tiantan Intelligent Medical Engineering Industrial Park, integrating 500,000 square meters of surrounding industrial space. The focus will be on laying out a Brain Research Center, a Brain Computing Power Center, a Brain Health Center, and a Brain Rehabilitation Center, creating an ecosystem for the transformation of brain health and BCI innovation achievements around Tiantan Hospital. The park will prioritize four main centers: the Brain Research Center will focus on key technology R&D like BCI and neural modulation; the Brain Computing Power Center will build an exascale-level supercomputing platform to provide computational support for brain science research and clinical data processing; the Brain Health Center will delve into full-cycle management of brain diseases; and the Brain Rehabilitation Center will establish a new paradigm for BCI brain-controlled active rehabilitation. Concurrently, efforts will accelerate to establish a “BCI Clinical Research and Transformation Alliance,” integrating resources from over 20 clinical collaboration bases nationwide to promote industry standard setting and collaborative technological innovation.
For developing the specialized large model for the brain health industry, the initiative will deeply mine and utilize the region’s vast clinical data resources to develop a dedicated brain health large model. It will launch an “AI Brain Health Doctor” application to comprehensively empower enterprises in brain health product R&D, clinical auxiliary diagnosis, and public health management, creating a closed-loop ecosystem of “data-algorithm-application.”
The two parties will also construct a matrix of industrial funds worth tens of billions. This includes jointly establishing a first-phase 1-billion-yuan brain health industry fund with social capital, while increasing investments from district-level government industrial guidance funds and municipal-level medical and health industry investment funds, forming a “1+N” fund matrix. The funds will primarily target core BCI technology R&D, achievement transformation, and startup incubation, attracting high-quality projects through “investment promotion and capital attraction.”
Furthermore, a batch of landmark key industrial projects are being implemented. The first batch has already launched eight projects from companies including Xiangyu Medical, Rayee Union, BrainCo, Medtronic, and Siemens Healthineers, covering four major areas: BCI hardware, algorithms, neurofeedback, and clinical evaluation. Additionally, eight reserve projects are planned, such as Zhonghua BCI’s ultra-multi-channel bidirectional implantable system and Brain-Tech’s fully implantable BCI with built-in battery, to further improve the industrial chain layout and create an internationally competitive industrial cluster.
“Looking towards the ’15th Five-Year Plan’ period, Fengtai District has clearly proposed the development goal of creating a ‘globally influential hub for BCI clinical innovation and industrial transformation.’ We will strengthen the support system for ‘brain economy’ innovation and development, deepen the district-hospital cooperation model of ‘one hospital, one park, one brand, one policy,’ and plan to build dedicated BCI pilot-scale production platforms to打通 the entire closed-loop chain from R&D breakthroughs, to pilot-scale transformation, to mass production implementation.” It was stated that Fengtai District will empower development through application scenarios, accelerating the formation of an industrial ecosystem. Based on Tiantan Hospital’s positioning as a core hub in the national BCI innovation system, the district will fully open diverse application scenarios such as rehabilitation specialty hospitals, community health service centers, and healthcare institutions for the elderly, promoting the rapid iteration and upgrading of cutting-edge technologies and innovative products.
