Last weekend, the Toyohira River Fireworks Festival lit up the night sky over Sapporo with 4,000 dazzling fireworks. About 30 years ago, fireworks displays were held every week along the Toyohira River, sometimes even three weekends in a row.
As a child, my parents took me to see the fireworks. In the crowded streets, where I could only see the backs of adults, my father suddenly lifted me onto his shoulders. Instantly, my view opened up, and the fireworks bursting in the sky felt close enough to touch—a memory that still warms my heart.
During my student years, my friends and I would eagerly arrive early, determined to get the best front-row spots. Despite the summer heat, the wait was worth it when the fireworks exploded right above us. I still remember the sky filled with light, the deep rumble in my chest, and the way the glowing embers fluttered down afterward.
