A satellite jointly produced by Hokkaido University of Science and a high school in Nagano Prefecture will be released into space from the International Space Station (ISS) on the night of the 3rd. Ten seconds later, the LED panel mounted on the satellite is expected to light up as it orbits the Earth. The release will be streamed live by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), and a public viewing of the stream will be held at the university.
Hokkaido University of Science
Hokkaido University of Science (formerly the Muroran Institute of Technology) is a private university located in Sapporo, Japan, founded in 1967. It focuses on science and engineering education, evolving from its original industrial technology roots to incorporate broader scientific fields and information technology. The university is known for its practical, career-oriented approach to higher education.
Nagano Prefecture
Nagano Prefecture is a mountainous region in central Japan, historically known as the landlocked province of Shinano. It is most famous for hosting the 1998 Winter Olympics in its capital city, Nagano, and is home to the historic Zenko-ji Temple, a revered Buddhist site founded in the 7th century.
International Space Station (ISS)
The International Space Station (ISS) is a habitable artificial satellite in low Earth orbit, representing one of the most significant international cooperative projects in history. It was constructed through a partnership between NASA (United States), Roscosmos (Russia), JAXA (Japan), ESA (Europe), and CSA (Canada), with its first module launched in 1998. Continuously occupied since 2000, it serves as a unique microgravity laboratory for scientific research and technological development.
Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA)
The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) is Japan’s national space agency, established in 2003 through the merger of three separate space-related organizations. It conducts research and development in aerospace, including satellite launches, planetary exploration (such as the Hayabusa asteroid missions), and participation in the International Space Station.
