New Delhi, December 22, 2025. FASTag will no longer be limited to toll tax; it can now be used for payments ranging from parking fees to fuel at petrol pumps. The government and related agencies are developing FASTag into a multi-utility digital payment system, eliminating the need for vehicle drivers to carry cash or cards for payments at different locations.
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is preparing to make FASTag multi-purpose. Under this initiative, payments for everything from parking to petrol can now be made using FASTag.
The six-month trial for this has been successful. The objective is for FASTag use to not be limited to just toll payments, but also to be used for paying for other services encountered during travel.
Officials stated that this will reduce the risk of digital fraud. Users will be able to use FASTag like a wallet, minimizing losses in case of fraudulent activity.
Which services will it be used for?
Meetings have already been held with fintech companies, payment service providers, banks, and toll operators regarding this change. Consensus was reached on using it for the following:
- Tolls
- Petrol Pumps
- EV Charging
- Food Outlets
- Vehicle Maintenance
- City Entry Charges
- Payment for other services during travel
According to experts, this initiative will bring a major transformation to the transport and mobility sector. Paying for multiple services through a single platform will make the system more transparent and reduce the potential for fraud. Additionally, it will aid in data-based traffic and parking management.
The government’s aim is to establish FASTag as a national mobility payment system, enabling all vehicle-related payments across the country to be easy and integrated. In the future, it could also be linked to electric charging stations, automatic tolls, and other transport services.
Overall, this new form of FASTag is seen as a step that will promote convenience, time savings, and cashless transactions for vehicle drivers. It is being viewed as another important initiative in the direction of a Digital India.
