The opening ceremony of the 2025 World Laureates Forum and the award ceremony for the 2025 World Laureates Association Prize were held yesterday morning at the permanent venue of the World Laureates Forum in Shanghai’s Lingang area. The Shanghai Municipal Party Committee Secretary attended and delivered a speech. An academician from the Chinese Academy of Sciences attended and presented awards to the winners of the 2025 World Laureates Association Prize in “Intelligent Science or Mathematics” and “Life Science or Medicine.” The Shanghai Municipal Party Committee Deputy Secretary and Mayor also attended.

During the speech, it was stated that systematic and comprehensive strategic planning has been made to advance the modernization drive during the 15th Five-Year Plan period, with important deployments for technological innovation as the guide, continuously generating new productive forces, and accelerating the cultivation of new growth drivers. This provides fundamental guidance and action plans for seizing the historical opportunities of the new round of technological revolution and industrial transformation, deeply implementing the innovation-driven development strategy, and comprehensively enhancing the efficiency of the national innovation system. Shanghai will deepen exploration in basic science, open innovation, and talent development, continuously strengthen basic research, deepen international cooperation, and cultivate fertile ground for talent, accelerating the construction of an international science and technology innovation center. Shanghai will deepen the construction of basic research pilot zones, strengthen the layout and cultivation of cutting-edge and disruptive technologies, and better lead the development of new productive forces. It will integrate the development of education, science and technology, and talent, accelerate the construction of high-level talent hubs, and support young scientists in taking on major responsibilities in important scientific and technological tasks. An open, fair, just, and non-discriminatory innovation environment will be created, working with scientists from around the world to promote the free flow of innovative elements such as knowledge, technology, and data, and jointly solve major global scientific problems. The spirit of scientists will continue to be promoted, encouraging scientific workers to identify important questions, persist in challenging research, and explore uncharted territories. It is hoped that scientists will spread truth and knowledge, mentor younger scholars, and sow the seeds of science and innovation dreams in the hearts of young people, contributing wisdom and strength to Shanghai’s scientific and technological innovation and global scientific progress.

Representatives from the China Association for Science and Technology and world-renowned scientists, including a Nobel laureate, delivered speeches at the opening ceremony.

Shanghai municipal leaders, presidents of Fudan University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and Tongji University, as well as Nobel laureates and other distinguished award winners attended the event.

At the award ceremony, an honorary professor from Stanford University received the “Intelligent Science or Mathematics Award.” An honorary professor from Cornell University and a distinguished professor from the University of Utah received the “Life Science or Medicine Award.”

This forum, with the theme “Future Science: Shanghai and the World,” consists of a main forum, six sub-forums, and related activities. Participants will focus on global technological frontiers, discussing topics such as basic research based on future science, technological breakthroughs, integrated innovation, international cooperation, and science and technology governance, providing scientific solutions and action paths for cultivating new productive forces and addressing common human challenges.
