Santaraghachi Express: Serious questions raised about security after woman raped
A major question has once again been raised regarding the safety of rail passengers. The incident of a female passenger being raped on the Santaragacchi Express has shocked the entire country. This incident occurred when the woman was alone in the train coach and the presence of security personnel was negligible.
An incident of rape against a woman has emerged on a passenger train between Guntur and Peddakurrapadu railway stations in Andhra Pradesh. The accused threatened the woman with a knife and raped her. He also robbed the victim of more than ₹5500 and her phone.
The incident occurred on October 13 when the woman, a resident of Rajamahendravaram, boarded the Santaragacchi Special Express to travel to Charalapalli. The victim was in the women’s coach and was traveling alone initially.
The victim filed an FIR upon reaching Charalapalli
When the train stopped at Guntur Railway Station, a 40-year-old man began opening the coach door. The victim informed him that this was the women’s compartment. Following this, the woman tried to close the door. However, the accused convinced her to open the door, entered the coach, and locked it from the inside. When the train was between Guntur and Peddakurrapadu Railway Stations, the man threatened her with a knife and raped her.
When the train approached Peddakurrapadu Railway Station, the accused jumped off and fled. The woman continued her journey to Charalapalli and contacted the Secunderabad State Railway Police for legal action.
GRP officials stated that a Zero FIR has been registered regarding the incident and it is being transferred to the Nadikudi Police Station in Andhra Pradesh.
This shameful incident on the Santaragacchi Express serves as a warning that the railway security system needs to be strengthened further. Merely creating rules for the safety of women passengers is not enough; ensuring their actual implementation will be the real improvement.
